We were founded in the year 2000 as a Millennium initiative when a group of Freemen of various towns and cities in England and Wales decided to start a new guild of Freemen of Nurses and Carers. Each of those Freemen were either nurses or carers at that time and their aim was simply to raise charitable funding for third world countries. This was pursued with vigor and our membership whilst confined to Freemen of towns in England and Wales grew as did our enthusiasm to deliver positive changes to peoples lives in third world countries.
Given that our membership was by its own nature very limited due to the fact that each of our members had to be a Freemen we invited Freemen of English and Welsh towns who happened to reside abroad to join our ranks and then the guild took on its international flavour. In recent years our membership has declined due to death of many members and consequently Arnold Baker who was a long term carer for various family members and is Freeman of the City of London was unanimously elected to be our permanent president with a view to moving things forward in a more positive fashion.
Our President’s first act was to persuade existing members that we should allow any nurse or carer or any retired nurse or carer whether or not they are a freeman and regardless of nationality to become members of the guild because our strength in numbers was the golden key which would enable the guild to persuade the powers that be in many nations that nurses and carers of this day and age deserve a far better deal than they currently get from many states. This proposal was unanimously carried and our President was given autonomy to expand our guilds membership and the authority to promote the guild without restriction. So whilst at first the guilds membership was very limited and only open to applicants by invitation who were freemen of English and Welsh towns and cities our membership has been opened to all qualified nurses and carers wherever they reside provided that they remain in good standing within these professions or have retired from nursing and caring whilst in good standing in recognition of their outstanding ability and commitment to patients and clients whilst understanding and that they also share common interests, common concerns and common difficulties.
So whilst we very happy to continue to allow Freemen who happen to be nurses or carers or retired nurses or carers to be members of the guild. We are very pleased to confirm that membership of The International Guild of Nurses and Carers is open to all nurses and carers or retired nurses or carers of every nationality regardless of race religion colour or creed.
Now that we have recently extended membership of the guild to a far wider range of members it is hoped that demand for membership will increase steadily because we understand more than most that both of our caring professions are jointly and individually doing their very best for the patients and clients every day of the year. For these and many other reasons we believe that it is necessary and desirable to bring both professions together into the one guild so that they can share and exchange knowledge and experience at both ends of the caring spectrum for the common good. Our members from the more affluent nations are encouraged to try to disseminate knowledge to nations who have rather less financial muscle and we encourage members who have the ability to do so, to travel aboard so that they may impart knowledge and experience to areas of the world where their experience can make a huge difference and help to save lives.
We believe that governments in every country need to be constantly reminded of the marvelous work that nurses and carers do, day in and day out, in service for the nation and for the good of humanity in seeking the best care possible for the sick and dying.
We also believe that leading politicians in every nation need to be re-educated so that they may begin to properly understand that without the dedication and commitment of hugely committed carers and nurses, their nation would face very serious consequences which could devastate communities and go on to lead to spectacular failures in health care provision which could easily bring a small nation to its knees and in very quick order and even the most civilized nations would faultier and fail if it were not for the continued good will and dedication to duty of carers and nurses alike.
In essence The International Guild of Nurses and Carers is here to be ‘an international voice’, speaking loudly but constructively on behalf of each of it’s members in seeking out improvements for our members in all areas of their work so that in the fullness of time members and patients and clients can each benefit from any positive changes that come along as a result of these initiatives.
